Softball Bested at Home

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The UC Riverside Softball Team opened the final weekend series of the regular season with a tough outing against first place Cal State Fullerton. The Highlanders matched the Titans for much of the afternoon, but in the end would fall 5-3 in game one and 14-6 in game two.

GAME ONE
Junior pitcher Melanie Olmos was solid to begin the game allowing just two runs through five innings, but would ultimately earn the loss as the Highlanders fell just short offensively despite a hopeful seventh inning.

After falling behind 1-0 in the second frame, UCR punched back immediately tying the game on a homer from senior Amanda Lynch, her fourth of the season.

They would remain scoreless until the seventh inning where UCR trailed 5-1, but this very resilient team refused to quit putting up a pair of runs to extend the game. The Highlanders loaded the bases on big hits by Lynch and fellow senior Rebecca Faulkner, and scored on heads up baserunning to cut the lead 5-3.

CSF would close out the game retiring the final two batters in order.

GAME TWO
The second game of the series was a close affair through the early innings, but the Titan offense found its rhythym with a big sixth inning to end the game early.

CSF took its momentum from game one striaght into the second puttig up five runs in the first two innings, but UCR would again answer with a four-run fourth to hop back in the game. Junior Danielle Ortega was first notching an RBI double before the very next batter, Olmos, crushed her 6th home run of the season, a three-run bomb.

UCR came close, but again the Titan offense awoke scoring in each of the next three innings, and although the Highlanders showed resilience again with a two-run home run from junior Emma Ramelot in the seventh, it was not enough as the Titans earned it 14-6.

The Highlanders will now close out the regular season tomorrow afternoon in a senior day matchup.
