Baseball Drops Saturday Doubleheader

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - A day after their Friday night game got cancelled and pushed to a doubleheader on Saturday, the UC Riverside baseball had a tough day at the office versus Cal State Fullerton. The Highlanders dropped the first game on Saturday 11-8 and then the second game 13-5.

Game 1
After learning sophomore Abbott Haffar would be unable to pitch this weekend, the coaching staff had their hands tied to try and figure out how to get 54 outs on the day. Head Coach Troy Percival talked about trying out how to figure out the weekend pitching situation, "It's going to be tough today with the doubleheader. Hopefully we can get a lot of strikes from our guys."

Percival sent out junior Kevin West to start game one but the junior wasn't able to find the strike zone in the first inning which led to Fullerton scoring four first inning runs.

The Highlanders were able to cut the lead in half to 4-2 after senior Yeager Taylor scored sophomore Nathan Webb on a fielding error by the shortstop. Sophomore Dylan Orick then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Taylor.

Riverside eventually took the lead in the bottom of fourth inning as Webb, senior Dean Miller and Taylor each had an RBI double in the inning. The team batted around as freshman Alec Arnone scored the first run of the inning and drove in their last run of the inning. Scoring three runs with two outs gave the Highlanders a 7-5 lead after four innings.

Sophomore Jeremiah Priddy relieved West and pitched 4 1/3 innings only allowing one earned run while striking out three. Junior Shamus Lyons also pitched well for the team as he tossed a scoreless inning with a strikeout.

Webb finished the game with two hits and scored twice. Junior Travis Bohall had himself a great first game as he collected four hits while also scoring twice. Miller, Taylor and Arnone each had two hits apiece.

Game 2
Another slow start was the undoing for the Highlanders in game two as the Titans scored five runs in the first inning. It was a hole that Riverside was unable to climb out of.

Senior Matt Hardy continued his hot hitting with runners on base as he had an RBI single to score Taylor from second to get the Highlanders on the board, 5-1.

Miller had an RBI double and Taylor an RBI single in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 6-3. But that was as close as Riverside was able to get.

Bohall had an outstanding day as he finished with three hits in the second game and seven hits on the day; he also scored five runs between the two games. Taylor had four hits in game two with two RBIs.

The Highlanders will look to salvage the series in the third game on Mother's Day.
