Cannon’s Record Home Run Not Enough for Baseball

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The UC Riverside Baseball team had their bats going on Tuesday but were unable to come out on top versus Grand Canyon as they fell to the Antelopes 10-7. Junior Connor Cannon set the UCR record for home runs in a season, 17, with his second inning moon shot over the scoreboard.

Cannon has been breaking records all season as he broke the UCR career home runs record and the Division II single season record. But now he is all alone at the top of the mountain for UCR's Division I and II history when he hit his 17th shot of the season.

Unfortunately, his record setting night wasn't enough for the Highlanders as the Antelopes scored eight of their ten runs in the third and fourth innings.

Junior Travis Bohall has been on an absolute tear recently as he collected three hits in this game; he now has 10 hits in his last three games. He has raised his average 46 points in those three games to .341. He drove in freshman Damien Sanchez in the third inning to cut the lead to 6-2.

Sanchez also had a nice game for Riverside as he collected a career-high three hits two RBIs; he has five hits in his last two games.

Cannon and freshman Alec Arnone did their best to keep a comeback alive as both had RBI hits in the seventh and eighth innings. Arnone finished with two hits including a double and Cannon finished with three hits.

After a rough first four innings, the Highlanders found some solid relief the remainder of the game as juniors Hayden Petrovick, Kevin West, Riley Ohl, senior Jarden Noonan and Arnone pitched a combined 4 2/3 innings only allowing two hits and one run.

Riverside will travel to Cal Poly to face the second place team in a three-game series with the Mustangs starting on May 18.
