Defensive Miscues Hurt Baseball in Series Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – One of the top teams in the Big West this season, Cal Poly, showed why they're at the top as the beat the UC Riverside Baseball team 12-3. The Mustangs were able to control the game from start to finish and the Highlanders couldn't find a rhythm.

In a game that wasn't pretty in which there was a total of seven errors committed, it was the Highlanders that came out on the short end. The Highlander pitching staff allowed 12 runs but only seven of them were earned.

Senior Yeager Taylor gave the team their only lead of the game as he singled home fellow senior Dean Miller to give Riverside an early 1-0 lead. But after that quick lead, Cal Poly played well and took the lead in the following innings as they scored at least one run in the first six innings.

Taylor and Miller combined for three of the Highlander's five hits with Taylor driving in two RBIs.

The team received scoreless relief efforts from juniors Kevin West and Adrian Garcia as well as sophomore Ari Gerber. They combined to throw 2 2/3 innings only allowing one hit and striking out three.

The Highlanders take on the Mustangs for game two of the series at 1:00 p.m. at Baggett Stadium.
