Baseball’s Late Comeback Falls Short

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – A late push at a comeback wasn't enough for the UC Riverside Baseball team as they were bested by Cal Poly 7-4. The team was able to get the lead down to one run in the eighth inning but eventually fell to the Mustangs.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead by scoring three runs in the first inning. Riverside answered in the top of the third inning as junior Travis Bohall had an RBI bunt single down the third base line to score freshman Jacob Shanks. Bohall's single extended his hitting streak to seven games.

Senior Dean Miller continued to produce as he hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score freshman Damien Sanchez. The sac fly cut the lead to one run as the Highlanders were still down 3-2.

Cal Poly was able to put a couple more runs on in the fifth and seventh inning to take a 5-2 lead before Riverside made their comeback.

The top of the eighth started off with the first four batters reaching base for the Highlanders. Miller led off with a single to left center and he was followed up by senior Yeager Taylor who reached on an error by the shortstop. Big West Player of the Year candidate junior Connor Cannon walked to load the bases.

Junior Dylan Orick singled to center to score Miller to cut the lead to 5-3 with no outs. Shanks then hit into a fielder's choice to third base but Taylor was able to score to cut the deficit to one run. But the team was unable to capitalize on the momentum and the comeback ended there.

The Mustangs tacked on two more insurances runs in the bottom half of the inning and that proved to be too daunting for the Highlanders.

Game three of the series will be played at 1:00 p.m. as the Highlanders look to steal the final game of the set.
