Haffar’s Quality Start Tops Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore Abbott Haffar threw 6 1/3 solid innings to lead the UC Riverside Baseball team over Cal Poly in the third and final game of the series. The Highlanders came out on top 6-5 to avoid the sweep.

Sophomore Nathan Webb got the Highlanders started with a leadoff single to right field. He eventually moved to third on a groundout and a wild pitch. Senior Dean Miller hit a sac fly to right to put the Highlanders on the board.

The Mustangs came back and scored runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-1 lead but that was the last time the Highlanders didn't have the lead.

In the top of the fourth, freshman Jacob Shanks hit his second career home run as he hit a two-run home run to left field to give Riverside the lead. Miller got his second RBI of the game as he hit a single to short.

Senior Yeager Taylor had a two-run single to cap off the Highlanders' five run fourth inning to take a 6-2 lead. Cal Poly scored a couple of unearned runs to make it close but Riverside held on to the lead for the win.

Haffar had another solid showing for the Highlanders as he only allowed two earned runs over 6 1/3 innings for his fourth win of the season. He struck out three batters while not walking any. Junior Hayden Petrovick threw 2 2/3 innings of relief only allowing one hit while striking out three, earning his first save of the season.

The Highlanders will play their fourth game in four days as they come back to the Plex versus Oregon at 1:00 p.m.
