Great All-Around Performance Earns Win for Baseball

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – It was a complete game for the UC Riverside Baseball team as they beat Oregon 3-1 on a Monday afternoon game. The Highlanders played great team defense behind tough pitching to go along with timely hitting. It was the team's second straight win and their 11th win at the Plex this season.

Oregon actually started the game off swinging the bats well as their stud third baseman Spencer Steer tied a school record for RBIs in a season, 56, with an RBI single to left field in the top of the first inning. But that was the last time the Ducks crossed home plate; in fact, Oregon only made it as far as third base one more time for the rest of the game.

Freshman Alec Arnone started the game and pitched three innings only allowing that one run to the top of the Ducks order.

The Highlanders had some fortune as they scored in the bottom of first on an error by the Ducks to tie it up 1-1.

It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth until there was another run in the game as sophomore Cole Pofek hit a rocket over the right field wall for his second home run of the season and gave Riverside a 2-1 lead.

That lead put senior Jared Noonan in line to earn his third win of the season. The senior pitched three shutout innings

Sophomore Nathan Webb led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and was moved over by a sac bunt by junior Travis Bohall. An ill-advised pick-off throw that went into centerfield allowed Webb to get to third with only one out. Senior Dean Miller stepped up to the plate with a 1-1 count and hit a bullet down the third base line to score Webb. The insurance run gave the Highlanders a 3-1 lead which was more than enough for the pitching staff.

Junior Kevin West pitched two scoreless innings of relief and struck out two batters. Freshman Andre Granillo earned his fourth save of the season as he struck out two batters in the last frame to seal the win.

The Highlanders' outfield was busy on Monday night as they corralled 17 fly outs out of the 27 total outs.

Riverside comes back to the Plex for the final series of the season as they face UCI for a three-game set starting on Thursday.
