UCI’s Hot Start Proves Too Much for Baseball

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – On a cold day of baseball with some drizzle throughout the early innings, the Highlanders' bats went cold and didn't heat up until it was too late. The UC Riverside Baseball team fell to UC Irvine 11-4 in the first game of the last series of the season.

It was a slow start for the Highlanders as they fell behind 11-0 after the first two innings. The Anteaters were swinging the bats like they were a team possessed as they collected 12 hits in the first two frames.

Freshman Trevor Bateson calmed down after a shaky second inning as he pitched five straight scoreless innings. After allowing four earned runs in the second inning, Bateson found his groove and shutdown UCI the rest of the way.

The Highlanders chipped away at the Anteater's lead with a run in the fifth inning and two more in the bottom of the sixth and another in the bottom of the ninth to score the last four runs of the game.

The team was led by sophomore Dylan Orick who had two hits on the night and scored one of the Highlanders' runs.

Riverside also received shutout innings of relief from Junior Cole Tucker and senior Jared Noonan. Both pitchers struck out two batters each in their inning of work.

The Highlanders look to rebound tomorrow for game two at 6:00 p.m.
