Granillo Earns First Career Win vs. UCI

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Freshman Andre Granillo earned his first career win for the UC Riverside Baseball team as they beat UC Irvine 3-1 in the second game of the set. It was a beautiful day for baseball in Riverside and the Highlanders took advantage of the weather as they played a superb game from start-to-finish.

Sophomore Jeremiah Priddy got the start for the Highlanders in a game where the team determined it was going to be a bullpen game. Priddy found himself in a little bit of trouble in his two innings of work but was able to get inning ending double plays to end both frames without allowing any runs.

The Highlanders were clicking on all cylinders but finally got the bats going in the bottom of the fourth when the meat of their lineup came to bat. Senior Dean Miller singled up the middle and was then followed up two batters later by an RBI double off the left center wall by junior Connor Cannon. The double gave the Highlanders a 1-0 lead.

Junior Kevin West pitched four scoreless innings of relief as he was able to pitch his way out of some jams as well. West struck out three batters in his four innings while only allowing three hits. West got the crowd pumped up as he escaped a second and third with one out jam to hold the Highlanders' lead.

The Anteaters were able to tie the game up in the top of the eighth to make it interesting and were threatening with runners on first and third until Freshman Andre Granillo came in. He struck out the first batter he faced and got the next batter to fly out to left center to put an end to the momentum.

In the bottom half of the eighth inning, Riverside got some clutch hitting. Freshman Damien Sanchez was hit by a pitch to start the rally for the Highlanders. Sanchez was then moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Travis Bohall. Sophomore Dylan Orick stepped into the box and hit the first pitch he saw up the middle for an RBI single to give Riverside a 2-1 lead.

Miller followed up with a bloop single to center to put runners on first and second. Senior Yeager Taylor then hit a funky bouncer to first but the first baseman wasn't able to corral it for an error that allowed Orick to score from second. That gave the team a 3-1 lead and that was enough for Granillo.

Granillo proceeded to strike out two batters in the top of the ninth to close it out and earn his first career win.

The Highlanders secured a .500 or better home record for the first time since 2016. They play the rubber match tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. for senior day. The seniors will look to end their careers on a win and potentially play spoiler for UCI.
