LONG BEACH, Calif. - Saturday afternoon didn't see much better results for the UC Riverside Baseball team against Long Beach State as they lost 6-4. The Highlanders held a lead at one point but as the game was a back and forth affair, the Dirtbags finished out on top.
Down 1-0 going into the top of the third, Riverside tied it up for the first of two ties in the game.. Junior Connor Cannon got the Highlanders on the board with an RBI single to score sophomore Nathan Webb.
Still tied 1-1 going into the top of the fifth, the Highlanders took their only lead of the game. It got started with an RBI single by senior Dean Miller to score Webb. Cannon hit a shot to third but Long Beach wasn't able to field it cleanly for an error which scored Miller to give the Highlanders a 3-1 lead.
Unfortunately, the Dirtbags tied it up in the bottom half of the inning and eventually the lead in the next inning to go up 5-3.
Riverside was able to score another run on an error in the eighth to make it a one run game but they weren't able to tie it up.
Webb, Miller and sophomore Dylan Orick all had two hits in the contest. The team also had five stolen bases on the game as Cannon and junior Travis Bohall had two each. Junior Riley Ohl pitched a scoreless inning of relief with a strikeout.
The Highlanders look to salvage the series in game three on Sunday. The game starts at 1:00 pm.
