Women's Volleyball Goes 2-0 in Season Opening Doubleheader

DEKLAB, Ill.— The UC Riverside Women's Volleyball Team (2-0) is off to a terrific start in the 2019 season as the Highlanders opened the year with a pair of dominant victories at the Northern Illinois Tournament. UCR topped a pair a neutral opponents and only dropped one set on the day sweeping SIU Edwardsville 3-0 before topping Fairleigh Dickinson 3-1.
SIUE
The Highlanders' first matchup was a one sided affair with the team dropping the Cougars of SIUE in three straight sets of 17-20-18. UCR's offense seemed to grow with each set tallying 10 kills in the first, 14 in the second, and 17 in the third on their way to a 41-kill match. The Highlanders would win the efficiency battle as well posting a .250 attack percentage compared to the Cougars' .039.
The two teams remained deadlocked through the opening points, with UCR even trailing early, but after matching the Cougars at 5-5, the Highlander would take off to lead by as much as nine points in the set before claiming it 25-17.
The second set was a different story with both teams trading off until late. They would find themselves tied at 17-17 before the Highlanders mounted a 8-3 run to take the set 25-20 and put themselves in a position to take the match.
The second set momentum would carry over into a 25-18 third and final set with UCR going on another late run to capture the first win and the first sweep of the season.
The work load was a mixture of new and old faces with freshman Amarachi Osuji leading the way with 11 kills and junior Morgan Kline notching 28 assists. Juniors Kat Lowry and Alexis Vanlandingham tallying five blocks each.
FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON
The second match of the day saw a breakout performance from freshman Ashley Dittmann who led the team in three categories with an outstanding 25 kills, five aces, and 18 digs. Osuji added another terrific outing notching double digit kills again with 14.
The first set was a one-sided affair with the Highlanders taking it 25-13, but the Knights would bounce back to grind our a tough 28-26 win in the second to tie the match.
Tied at 1-1, the third set would be the biggest battle of the night as the two teams were locked at 21-21, but back-to-back kills and aces from Dittmann would give the Highlanders the 25-23 lead and a 2-1 lead.
The third set was then all Highlanders as the team collected the 3-1 win with a huge 25-16 third set victory.
Kilne showed out once again as the setup master with 32 assists and sophomore Dejah Dade added 19 of her own.
The Highlanders will now look to sweep the tournament tomorrow with a final match against host Northern Illinois.
