Women's Volleyball Splits Final Matches of Opening Road Stint

PHOENIX—The UC Riverside Women's Volleyball Team (4-5) finished off its nine-match road stint Saturday night splitting the final two matches of the GCU Invitational. The Highlanders would drop a 3-1 match to the host Lopes, before sweeping Eastern Washington 3-0.
Following the matchup with the Eagles, freshman Isabella Scarlett was named to the All-Tournament Team after posting a line of 18 kills and four block assists on the weekend.
GCU
The Highlanders got out to a hot start in their matchup with the Lopes edging out the team in the first set 27-25. They would hold as much as a six point lead.
GCU would then claim the next three sets by scores of 25-11, 25-21, and 27-25. The fourth set saw a heated battle with twelve lead changes, twelve ties, and neither team taking more than a three point lead.
Freshman Amarachi Osuji continued her impressive start to her first collegiate season adding a career-high 17 kills to go along with a career-high 15 digs. Junior Ayla Fresenius followed with 12 kills of her own and junior Morgan Kline led the team with 21 assists.
EASTERN WASHINGTON
After dropping a nail-biter to the Eagles last season, the Highlanders would get their revenge in the rematch sweeping EWU 25-21, 25-18, 25-23. UCR took the kill battle 40-23, and truly dominated in a second set that only saw three ties and lead changes.
Once again it was Osuji leading the attack with another dozen kills, while sophomore Deja Dade led all players with 29 assists, a career-high. On the defensive end, senior Tara Eaton topped the Highlanders with 11 digs.
After a long three weeks on the roads to start the season, UC Riverside finally returns home to host the UCR Classic, which begins Friday, September 20th. The Highlanders will see Pennsylvania in the team's home opener, before facing Seattle the following day.
