Box Score 2 The UC Riverside Men's Tennis team continues its travels on the East Coast with a doubleheader that crossed state lines. They started their morning in Brooklyn, N.Y. against Saint Francis College and later headed to Hamden, Conn. to take on Quinnipiac University.
Â
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Highlanders found themselves near Coney Island in Brooklyn this morning to play the first match of two slated for the day against the Saint Francis College Terriers.
Â
The Terriers battled through doubles, dropping the #1 match first but rallying through the #2 and #3 flights to take the doubles point. The Highlanders had successfully secured the doubles point in their previous three matches, so entering singles from behind was not the start to the day they were looking for. Pair
Daniel Velek and
Andreas Whelan-Merediz would be the only Highlanders to win a doubles set, clinching the #1 flight 6-1. Head Coach
Mattias Johansson said, "Saint Francis came out strong in doubles. We did not necessarily play our best as a team, but they took it from us so credit to them."
Â
The Highlanders were ignited by the doubles loss and rose to the challenge, sweeping singles.
Daniel Velek won #4 singles in straight sets. "All guys stepped up in singles. Noticeable was that Velek won his match in 28 minutes, hitting winners left and right on these fast indoor courts."
Â
The final score would be 6-1 with the Highlanders notching another win and continuing a perfect streak on this trip.
Â
HAMDEN, Conn. – After traveling two hours up the Long Island Sound, the Highlanders arrived at the back half of their doubleheader, facing Quinnipiac University in the evening.
Â
Much like the first match, Johansson's Highlanders would find themselves fighting for the doubles point and battling through every match for the decision. "It was another long day, and the team came through again with a 4-3 win after securing the doubles point in a 9-7 tiebreaker." Johansson continued, "We went up 4-0 in singles and played match tiebreaker as deciding set in two matches instead of a full third set. So even though the 4-3 score is close, we clinched the match early"
Â
The Highlanders extend to 9-5 overall and are currently on a five match win streak. They have one more stop on the East Coast, traveling to Worcester, Mass. to play Holy Cross on February 17 at 2:30 PM PT.
