Gnago Posts Double-Double, Otto Adds 17 In Loss at UCSB

Santa Barbara, Calif.- The UC Riverside Women's Basketball team entered Saturday's matchup with UC Santa Barbara with hopes of capturing the season series, however, the Gauchos got past the Highlanders, 65-47, in the Thunderdome.

UC Riverside (8-18, 4-8) got a double-double effort from Daphne Gnago, who had 17 points and 10 rebounds to go with two steals. Jannon Otto also posted 17 points for the Highlanders in the loss. 

UC Santa Barbara (12-14, 7-6) got out to an 18-8 first quarter lead, and followed that up by outscoring UCR 22-7 in the second. 

"We really just dug ourselves too big of a hole to get out of. We had some good effort in the fourth quarter, we'll look to build off of that for next week." said Head Coach Seyram Bell. 

The Highlanders outrebounded the Gauchos 42-36 for the game, and 17-9 on the offensive glass, resulting in five additional shot attempts than the hosts. Of the 21 made baskets by UC Riverside, eight were assisted. Of the 25 made shots by UCSB, 18 were assisted, including seven from three-point range-UCR went 0-5 from distance for the game. 

The Highlanders did outscore UCSB 21-11 in the final frame, however, the Gauchos' lead remained as they went on to claim the, 65-47, victory and earn a series split.

Looking Forward

UC Riverside returns to the SRC Arena for a Thursday evening battle with Cal State Fullerton at 5 pm in the first game of a UCR Basketball ESPN double-header with the Men's team slated for an 8 pm tip-off.
