Women’s Tennis Falls to UC Davis and Oregon Over Weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of California Riverside Highlanders Women's Tennis team had a tough weekend at home, hosting Big West Conference opponent UC Davis and the University of Oregon. The Highlanders would drop both matches 1-6, but had strong individual showings in single flights across both days.

UCR faced their first Big West opponent on the season in UC Davis on February 1 and struggled to get an edge over the Aggies. Both teams battled for the Doubles point, with every pair of Highlanders getting at least four points. In #3 Doubles, Lindsey Gelinas and Lauren Wolfe pushed their set to 5-7. Tia Elpusan got the lone point for the Highlanders in #3 Singles when her match was retired after the Aggies clinched the #1 flight.

Head Coach Mark Henry said, "We lost 6-1 but the individual matches were positive steps in the right direction. We were more focused and competitive throughout the match. UC Davis played very well today."

On Sunday, February 2, Coach Henry's squad faced the University of Oregon. "We played well today," Henry commented, "but Oregon was just a little bit better." The Highlanders had some strong Singles matches, with Natalie Shamma in the #1 spot fighting to the last point 3-6, 7-5, 10-12. Tia Elpusan also battled through a tiebreaker set in the #3 flight, ultimately dropping it 5-7, 7-5, 5-10. Hanh Pham got the Highlanders on the board in #6 Singles, winning 7-6, 6-3.

The Highlanders are 1-3 overall after this weekend's competition. The team returns to action on Wednesday, February 5, looking to get a win against Westmont College at 1:30 p.m. on their home court on campus in Riverside, Calif.
