Highlanders' Comeback Falls Short At Cal State Fullerton

Fullerton, Calif. — The UC Riverside Women's Basketball (7-16, 3-6) team's late rally came up short in their, 71-61, loss at Cal State Fullerton (12-9, 4-4).
Â
Jannon Otto led the way for the Highlanders with 23 points, and nine rebounds, while Keilanei Cooper had 15 points, nine rebounds to go with five assists.Â
Â
The Titans played zone defense and invited the UCR to launch from the outside. The Highlanders were plagued by cold-shooting in the Saturday afternoon loss as they shot 36.5 percent for the game, and 2-18 from three. Â
Â
"I felt like we took the bait a little too often tonight in settling for outside shots versus their zone. We did cut down on the turnovers, but our shot selection could have been much better." said Head Coach Seyram Bell.Â
Â
Cal State Fullerton outscored UC Riverside 34-16 in the paint with 20 of those points coming via the fast break.Â
Â
Early in the fourth period, UCR faced a 16-point deficit, which they would cut to nine over a three-minute stretch in which they outscored the hosts 10-3 in a run that featured buckets by Otto, Cooper and Daphne Gnago to make it 60-51.
Â
The clubs would play the final minutes nearly even en route a 71-61 finish, in favor of the Titans.Â
Â
Looking Forward
Â
The Highlanders return to friendly confines of the SRC Arena next Saturday, when they'll host Long Beach State in their lone game of the week.
