RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside men's basketball returned to the court on Saturday afternoon at the SRC Arena for an exhibition game with Cal State LA, coming away with a 90-56 win.
Zyon Pullin flirted with a triple double to the tune of 17 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, but it was UCR's transition offense that laid the foundation for the matinee win.
Flynn Cameron started things off straight from the opening tip with a corner three, propelling UCR to a 7-2 run to open the exhibition.
Cal State LA caught up offensively, but cold spells from both sides kept a six-point differential midway through the first half. A Jhaylon Martinez jumper down low following Pullin's second steal of the afternoon extended the Highlanders' lead just before a timeout at 5:43.
It wasn't until after the timeout, though, that the real separation between the two sides began to take shape. UC Riverside would go on a 9-2 run out of the break while making five of its last six field goals overall, including buckets from big down low presences in Callum McCrae and Dragan Elkaz.
The duo's returns to the court proved to be vital in UCR's pulling away. UCR converted on 10 of their last 11 from the floor in an 11-1 run, with McCrae dropping in four points and Elkaz burying a three from the wing.
"Cal and Dragan give us a lot of experience," Magpayo said. "Callum gives us a skilled 7 footer who also stabilizes us defensively and rebounding. Dragan has made big shots in big games so he is not afraid to be that weapon off the bench."
UCR ended the half with an advantage on both ends of the floor. The Highlanders went into the intermission on an 11-1 run and making three of their last four from deep while holding Cal State LA to one of their final seven attempts. Pullin was two rebounds shy of a double double at the intermission, while much of UCR's offensive success came in transition with a 14-1 edge in points off turnovers.
The Highlanders manufactured another quick scoring spree, turning four minutes time into an 11-2 run that included Elkaz's second triple of the day and four points from Martinez. UCR's defense also held the Eagles scoreless in that span.
McCrae and Moorman II both entered double digit scoring in the second half as UCR continued to stretch its lead. Along with Pullin, Cameron and Dom Pickett made it five Highlanders on the day with double digit scoring.
UCR opens the regular season on Tuesday, November 9 when they travel to San Diego State. The season opener from Viejas Arena will be broadcast on GoHighlanders.com.
