RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Sophomore middle blocker
Anya Green helped the Highlanders compete deep into the third set on offense and defense with six kills, a solo block and three block assists, but UC Riverside could not prevent Cal Poly from winning Thursday at SRC Arena, as UCR fell, 14-25, 11-25, 21-25.
Mylei Vargas-Deason had a service ace and 5 digs, and
Zoey Seput and
Dejah Dade both contributed 10 assists, but the Highlanders (4-11, 0-5 Big West) could not take Cal Poly deeper than the 46th point of the third set as the Mustangs (6-10, 4-1 Big West) won their second straight.
Thursday was the first meeting between UC Riverside and Cal Poly since Oct. 24, 2019. The Mustangs have won the last 13 meetings vs. the Highlanders. The last win for UC Riverside over Cal Poly came at San Luis Obispo in five sets on Nov. 22, 2013.
The Highlanders continue a four-match homestand vs. CSU Bakersfield Saturday, Oct. 8, at 4 p.m. at SRC Arena, followed by UC Santa Barbara Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. and CSUN Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. before heading back on the road Oct. 22 to Long Beach State.
