DAVIS, Calif. - A windy Saturday afternoon in Davis seemed to blow momentum in every which way between UC Davis and UC Riverside, making for an entertaining first day of a three-game series between the Aggies and Highlanders.
In the end though, an epic doubleheader that included five RBIs from Kennedi Sorensen did not go as planned as the Highlanders dropped the first two games of the Big West series, 4-2 and 7-6 in extra innings.
"I'm proud of the fight we showed," head coach Nikki Palmer said. "We can continue to use it moving forward."
Chrys Hildebrand took the ball for the series opener against the Aggies, racking up a quick four strikeouts through three innings and finishing the game with five.Â
UCR's offense breathed a little life into the game with a two-spot in the sixth inning. Sorensen knocked in her eighth RBI of the year on a single to right, scoring Katherine Montuya from third. Allison Troche advanced to third.Â
Marissa Burk, who went 1 for 3 in game one, kept the rally going with a bunt single that scored Troche.Â
Offense came earlier for the Highlanders in the backend of the doubleheader, as Montuya led off the game with an infield single before stealing second.Â
After Troche singled to second and came up with UCR's second stolen base of the inning, Sorensen brought them both home with a two-run RBI double down the left field line, her ninth and 10th RBIs of the season.Â
The Aggies put runners on the corners in the third inning, but Katie Barbarick, who retired five of her first batters of the game, shut the door to keep the Highlander lead at 2-0. Barbarick later set a new career high in the fifth inning with her fifth strikeout of the game and finished her outing with six.
Both teams traded late-game heroics, as Gigi Araki sent a two-run shot over the left field wall in the top of the seventh only for Davis to counter with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Highlanders punched right back with Sorensen's second two-run RBI double of the game before Davis landed a counterpunch in the bottom of the eighth.
