IRVINE, Calif. – The University of California, Riverside (UCR) Track and Field program heads to UC Irvine for the three-day long Big West Conference Championship. Action kicks off at 10:00 AM on Thursday with the Women's Hammer Throw. UCR will be represented by Filipino National Record holder Shiloh Corrales-Nelson who enters the meet with a lifetime best mark, 53.78m (176'5"), which has her ranked 6
th in the league this year. Rounding out the field events on day one is
JT Ober III, the defending Big West Javelin Champion. His competition is slated to begin at 3:00 PM on Thursday. Ober III will be looking to improve upon his current 8
th place ranking (56.72m or 186'1") to get into the top-three and earn an All-Big West performance.
On the track, day one (Thursday), the Highlanders will be represented by defending 400m Hurdle Champion,
Quinn Williams, who will be competing in the preliminary round of the 40m Hurdles. The top eight finishers from the prelim round will qualify for Saturday's finals. At 7:50 PM, the men's 10000m race will be contested. Representing UCR will be
Arman Irani. Earlier this season, Irani earned his 3
rd place ranking in this event running 29:12 at the Sound Running Collegiate Invitational. This mark has also earned him the 3
rd fastest time in UCR School History.
Day two brings a host of new events for the Highlanders. Some of UCR's expected highlights will be from Corrales-Nelson, contesting the women's shot put at 2:30 PM,
Monea Jennings will get things started for the Highlanders on the track at 4:30 PM with the 100m Hurdles trials. Eight qualifiers will move on to Saturday's final round. Jennings is currently ranked 10
th going into these championships with her lifetime best 14.75 seconds scored at the APU Bryan Clay Invitational. Immediately following her will be hurdle counterpart, Martin Billings whom will contest the men's 110m Hurdles. Billings 14.84 ranks him 9
th going into the championship weekend.
Andrew Jackson will be running the preliminary round of the men's 800m dash as well. The 800m will be contested in two heats, in which the top-eight finishers will qualify for Saturday's final round. Jackson is ranked 6
th with his lifetime best 1:52.16 effort from the Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific, last month. Rounding out the day for the Highlanders at 7:00 PM, Friday night is
Carolinh Calvert. Calvert will be contesting the 3000m Steeplechase event in which she is ranked 2
nd in the Big West. Calvert's best time 10:46.91, ranked 3
rd all-time at UCR.
Saturday will be the final day of competition for the Highlanders of UCR. Action begins at 11 AM with the men's triple jump.
Brian Nnoli will lead the Highlander men into battle as the 9
th ranked jumper, enter the competition with a mark of 14.43m 47' 4.25". He is followed closely by teammates Cam Lewis and
Titan Ruotolo. In the circle for the third straight day, Corrales-Nelson will attempt to lower her lifetime best 43.31m/142' 1" personal best. On the track, as mentioned, the top qualifiers from each individual event will compete in final round fo their individual events, and a timed final for 5000m will be contested as the penultimate event on the oval. For the women, 7
th ranked freshman,
Carolinh Calvert will take toe the track for a second time, in an attempt to score a top-eight finish and low her lifetime best 17:01 5k (ranked as 8
th all-time at UCR). She will toe the line with teammate
Dariana Miramontes. Leading the charge for the men will be
Arman Irani. Just 2 weeks ago, Irani ran the 3
rd fastest time in the Big West, which is also the 3
rd fastest time in UCR school history, when he stopped the clock at 13:54.20 seconds at the West Coast Relays Invitational hosted by Fresno State.
