SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – UC Riverside played to a dramatic 2-2 draw at Cal Poly on Saturday night in a rematch of last year's Big West quarterfinal matchup. The Highlanders went ahead in the 90th minute of play before Cal Poly punched back with the equalizer with 18 seconds remaining.
It's the second time this season UCR has eclipsed multiple goals in a match and first since the team's historic 4-1 win over St. Thomas back on August 28.
UCR had the upper hand on offense in the match's first 30 minutes with a 3-0 shot advantage and a 5-1 edge on corner kicks, taking 5-1 leads in both categories into the intermission after Freymar Omarsson opened the scoring in the 35th minute in the top shelf.
The first two Highlander shots came in the opening four minutes of the evening from Andrew Alexander and Oscar Penate.
The Highlanders made it seven matches this season with 10+ shots when Alexander launched his fourth shot of the match in the 86th minute, looking to break a 1-1 deadlock.
UC Riverside didn't have to wait much further for the breakthrough. Luka Lukic bagged his first goal as a Highlander in the most opportune time, finding the back of the net in the 90th minute before Cal Poly leveled with 18 seconds on the clock for the fireworks finish.
Lukic's go-ahead strike was assisted by Issa Badawiya, who played his 50th career match as a Highlander.
Another Big West tournament rematch awaits UC Riverside on deck when the Highlanders return home to hose UC Irvine on Wednesday, October 12 at 7:00 p.m.
