Third Set Rally Not Enough in Defeat to Cal Poly

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UCR played the second game of its four-match home stand to conclude the home season, falling 3-0 to Cal Poly on Saturday evening at the SRC Arena.

Mylei Vargas-Deason was the Highlanders' leading attacker for the second straight home game in back-to-back four-match home stands, going for eight kills on Saturday against the Mustangs on 33 swings. Vargas-Deason added an ace, six digs and a block assist to her stat queue as well.

Shannon Dunkin enjoyed her second appearance after making her UC Riverside debut earlier this week, registering four kills on an efficient six swings while adding a pair of block assists. Tayler Hifo reached 800 career assists on the dot with 21 against the Mustangs

The Highlanders came out of the intermission matching Cal Poly's energy and vision from both the pin and service line in set three after a slow first two sets. UCR hit .267 in the evening's third frame on the back of five kills from each from Vargas-Deason and Delaney Tate.

Ayanna Kimbrough came up big with two crucial block assists late in the set to help UCR shrink the gap, but the Mustangs pulled out the third set win.

UC Riverside will keep it in the Inland Empire next with its penultimate home match on Thursday, September 17 at 6:00 p.m. against CSUN on ESPN+.
