Record Performance Gives Highlanders Series Win at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – UC Riverside used a 10-run sixth inning to tie a program Division I record with 16 runs in a 16-0 run-rule rout of Cal Poly in Sunday afternoon's series finale at Bob Janssen Field.

Three different Highlanders recorded at least three hits on the day, while Max Ortega and Kat Montuya led the way with three RBIs each. All told, the Highlanders set a new program Division I single-game record with 15 RBIs.

"We worked together today and stuck through the whole game with the fight. It was good to see everybody step up and put some good swings on the ball," head coach Nikki Palmer said. "We just had fun, freed ourselves and trusted each other. It was fun. We're going to celebrate tonight and get ready for a tough opponent next weekend."

Chrys Hildebrand took the circle for Sunday's finale, going four scoreless innings with five strikeouts. With 96 strikeouts this season through 15 games, the senior is on pace to become the fastest Highlander pitcher in the Division I era to reach 100 strikeouts.

UCR plated a run in all but the fourth inning in Sunday's record-tying finale. The Highlanders got started early with a pair of fielder's choices in the third inning resulting in a 2-0 lead. UC Riverside's offense followed that up with a run each in the second and third inning before the offensive onslaught two frames later.

The first four Highlander batters of the sixth inning reached base safely before Ortega brought home Haylee Kela on a sacrifice fly to left field. Montuya and Jantzen Owen recorded back-to-back doubles, then UCR batted around after Nadia Witt's RBI single – Witt led off the inning with a five-pitch walk.

Montuya, Owen, Kela and Marissa Burk now all have on-base streaks of at least 10 games each.

UC Riverside now takes the record performance and series win into Fullerton next weekend for a three-game series with the Titans, starting with a single game on Friday, April 1 and the doubleheader on Saturday, April 2.
