RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside softball closed out the Amy S. Harrison Classic on Sunday with a single game against Sacred Heart, falling 5-4 at Amy S. Harrison Field.
UCR started the afternoon with back-to-back singles off the barrels of Lauryn Garewal and Haylee Kela, then after Gigi Araki reached on a fielder's choice to move the runners station to station, Garewal trotted home from third on a sacrifice fly from Kat Montuya.
Kela, who went 2 for 3 on the day, has now hit safely in 11 of her last 12 games, while Garewal has now hit safely in seven of her last eight outings.
SHU capitalized on a pair of UC Riverside fielding errors to go ahead 4-1 in the third inning, but Marissa Burk's two-run shot an inning later put UCR within a run before Garewal's sacrifice fly made it a 4-4 ballgame.
The Pioneers pulled ahead with a solo shot to left center in the sixth before the Highlanders loaded the bases in the seventh, but were unable to push the tying run across.
With the conclusion of the Amy S. Harrison Classic, UCR is back in action on Wednesday, March 9 for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch against San Diego on ESPN+. Tickets are available at highlanderstickets.universitytickets.com and students are free with a valid UCR ID.
