RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside won its second straight game on Friday to open a three-game set with UC Davis on Friday evening, holding off a late rally to grab the 10-8 at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Andrew Rivas enjoyed a breakout game in the series opener against the Aggies, going 2 for 4 with a run and a career-high three RBIs for his fourth multi-hit game of the year and first since March 10.
UC Davis took an early lead in the top of the first, but UCR wasted no time responding. The Highlanders put up a four-spot in the first, started by
Dylan Orick's RBI double on the first pitch of his at-bat.
Anthony Mata, who went 2 for 3 with three runs and a pair of RBIs, put UCR in front with a single through the left side that brought home Orick and
Joey Nicolai.
Mata's three runs are tied for the most in a game by a Highlander this season.
UC Riverside quickly jumped out to a 10-3 lead after four innings, as
Jeremiah Priddy left the Aggies with runners in scoring position in both the third and fourth innings.
The Aggies put up five runs across the seventh and eighth innings, but
AJ Roldan closed out the eighth before earning his first career save.
UC Riverside and UC Davis will play game two on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. from Riverside on ESPN+.
