RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside came out of the gate hot on Saturday night and erased a four-run deficit down the stretch to walk it off in game two, earning a dramatic 13-12 win over UC Davis at the Riverside Sports Complex.
The UCR lineup wasted no time getting on the board, pushing across six runs in the first inning thanks to a pair of two-run RBI singles from Sean McLeod and Jacob Badawi. Saturday marked the second consecutive night with a four-run inning and the Highlanders' highest-scoring frame since May of last season at California Baptist.
Badawi recorded a season-high four hits in a 4-for-5 outing that included a run in addition to his two RBIs. His fourth hit came on an infield single to second in the eighth inning.
McLeod left the yard for the first time this season on a solo home run in the third inning, followed by an RBI single from Taylor Juline that made it 8-5 after the Aggies plated five runs across the second and third innings.
UC Riverside put up a four-spot in the eighth inning to come back and tie the contest at 12 after putting the inning's first two batters aboard. Anthony Mata brought two runs home on his fourth hit of the night, an RBI single up the middle that cut UCR's deficit to two.
A pair of wild pitches from UC Davis' fourth pitcher of the evening allowed an aggressive Mata to move to third with Andrew Rivas and McLeod joining him on the base path. Andrew Rivas put runners on the corners with a five-pitch walk before McLeod loaded them after taking one on the shoulder.
Marcellus Pearson delivered the Highlanders' second clutch hit of the frame with a hard-hit single through the left side scoring Mata and Jayden Lopez to tie the game at 12.
UC Riverside quickly put two runners aboard in the home half of the ninth with a four-pitch walk and a hit batter, which turned into runners on the corners after an errant throw to first base. Lopez later delivered the walkoff single with a bloop into left field.
The Highlanders will go for the sweep on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch from the Riverside Sports Complex on ESPN+.
