RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside returned to the Riverside Sports Complex for the first time since April 26 to take on Washington State, falling 10-3.
Wednesday night's midweek matchup was UCR's third Pac-12 opponent this season after a three-game series at UCLA and a midweek home opener against Washington. The Cougars are UCR's seventh Power 5 opponent since 2017 and fifth from the Pac-12, joining UCLA, Washington, Oregon and Utah.
UCR's first two runs came with the bases loaded, both in the third inning with two outs. Danny Carnazzo drew a four-pitch walk and Andrew Rivas singled to left field to start the rally. Anthony Mata's walk loaded the bases before Dylan Orick's five-pitch walk brought Carnazzo home. UC Riverside took the lead on the next at-bat after Joey Nicolai was hit by a pitch.
Rivas went 2 for 5 with a run on Wednesday for his third multi-hit game in his last five. Jacob Shanks drove in a run for the sixth game in his last 10, going 2 for 4 with a stolen base and the RBI.
The Highlanders will stay in Riverside this coming weekend for a three-game series with UC Irvine, presented by Chick-fil-A. All three games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
