UCR Takes Down Portland State, 4-1, for First Road Win of the Season

PORTLAND, Ore., - The University of California, Riverside (UCR) Highlanders traveled north to Oregon for their first road game of the season, taking on the Portland State University Vikings in an afternoon match.
 
The teams traded shots in the first ten minutes, before the Highlanders were able to convert their first goal of the game. Assisted by Kameron Henry, Daphane Mendez put UCR on the scoreboard in the 13'.
 
The Highlanders got off eight shots in the first half, while strong defense held the Vikings to just three attempts. UCR headed into the locker rooms at halftime ahead 1-0.
 
An explosive 54' saw three total goals scored. First, Mckenzie Moore scored the Highlanders' second goal of the game unassisted. In short order, Portland state scored their only goal of the game in the bottom left corner past UCR defense. Before the minute expired, UCR's lead was extended by an own goal. It was 3-1, in favor of the Highlanders.
 
Alexandra Hargrave scored the final UCR goal off a penalty kick in the 81'.
 
The decisive win was bolstered by strong goalkeeping from Cassia Souza, with four saves on four shots on goal.
 
The Highlanders remain on the road, playing Boise State on Sunday, August 28.
