Highlanders Draw with Tritons on Thursday Night

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Cassia Souza earned her second shutout of the year and UC Riverside stretched its unbeaten run to five on Thursday at the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium, as the Highlanders played to a scoreless draw with UC San Diego in their sixth match in 14 days.

UCR stayed on the ball constantly off the opening kick but wouldn't make any busy work for UC San Diego's keeper. Each side had a 1v1 opportunity in the 20th and 21st minute when Alex Hargrave broke through the defense and came face to face with the Triton keeper before being shut down. UC San Diego flipped the script a minute later but sent a shot over the crossbar.

Charisma Benitez took a pass from Kameron Henry four minutes later and sent it on net on the volley, but the attempt was pushed aside.

An evenly-matched contest continued at the same tempo into the second half. Hargrave found McKenzie Moore in space at the near post before watching the ball roll over the end line.

Leyna Wood almost broke the deadlock in the 73rd with a mean curler to the far post that sailed over. Henry turned on the jets minutes later and went through the back line for another surefire chance, and UCR strung together one last solid build up in the last 10 minutes.

Thursday's match, while low on finishes, wasn't without minute milestones for a trio of Highlanders. Alyssa Carranza eclipsed 3,400 minutes for her Highlander career with a full 90 minutes on Thursday against the Tritons, while McKenzie Moore surpassed 3,000 for her collegiate career. Aleeyah Feliciano also passed the 2,000-minute mark in her career.

UC Riverside gets a much-needed week off before hosting UC Irvine on Thursday, September 29 at 7:30 p.m. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live stats available on the women's soccer schedule at GoHighlanders.com.
