RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Highlanders of the University of California, Riverside (UCR) took to the pitch on Thursday night, hosting the Anteaters of the University of California, Irvine at the UCR Soccer Stadium for UCR's third Big West competition of the season.
Neither team gained an edge in the scoreless first half, but the Eaters and the Highlanders traded 12 combined shots in the first 45 minutes. It didn't take long for either side to find an opening, as both UCR and UCI logged a shot on net in the first eight minutes.
Kameron Henry went for the bottom left of the goal mouth just two minutes after Irvine's attempt to open the scoring.
Cassia Souza made seven saves on the night with four coming in an upstart first half.
The Anteaters scored their lone goal of the game early in the second half off of a penalty kick, taking a 1-0 lead.
UCR's offense struggled to organize itself in the back half against the Eaters, getting just two shots off to Irvine's 10.
The Highlanders are back in action on Thursday, October 6 to begin a two-game road trip with a 7:00 p.m. kick at Cal State Fullerton.
