RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside and Weber State played a rescheduled match in the early hours of Sunday morning at the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium to escape the heat, but UCR fell 2-1 despite a second-half goal from Leyna Wood.
UCR's first 15 minutes of the match were spent very much on the offensive with four shots and three corner kicks in the early going. Among those four was Wood getting her first crack at goal in the sixth minute, a shot that went out to the left. The Santa Ana College transfer would get another chance in the 23rd minute before Weber State opened the scoring seconds later.
The Highlanders remained on the offensive for the remainder of the half with five of their six corner kicks in the opening 45 despite going into the break down 2-0.
Alexandra Hargrave made two attempts at goal in the early morning matchup and has now attempted at least two shots in all but one game this season.
Wood started the match but came on as a substitute for the second half, only to find the back of the net 1:16 later for the equalizer. Alyssa Carranza looked to make it 2-1 in the 49th minute, but saw her shot sail off to the left.
Spenser Gonzales earned her fourth appearance on the season and her first shot on goal as a Highlander, a last-gasp effort in the final minute of play that the Wildcats' keeper was able to corral.
UC Riverside next will make the short trip to California Baptist for the Crosstown Showdown on Thursday, September 8 at 7:00 p.m.
