RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside and Hawaii entertained another packed SRC Arena on Saturday afternoon, but Hawaii had the upper hand slightly with a 67-63 win to cool off the Highlanders.
UCR and Hawaii matched each other on the boards in the early going with Flynn Cameron grabbing three of the Highlanders' seven rebounds at the under-12 media timeout, and Lachlan Olbrich got hot on the offensive end with a pair of threes and three boards.
UC Riverside bullied Hawaii on the offensive glass with a 21-5 edge for the afternoon. UCR also dominated second-chance points with a 21-7 advantage.
The Highlanders kept within distance of Hawaii, but caught up with a 5-0 run that included Zyon Pullin connecting from downtown and a putback from Olbrich that put the Aussie over 10 points for the fifth straight game.
Olbrich (21 points, 10 rebounds) and Cameron (13 points, 14 rebounds) each put up double doubles in Saturday's matinee. Olbrich set a new career high with his first 20-point game as a Highlander while Cameron's 14 boards were a new career high.
UC Riverside was firing on all cylinders out of halftime. The Highlanders came out of the break going 3 of 6 from the floor, including a corner three from Cameron that gave UCR its first lead since 2-0. Hawaii took control for a chunk of the second half until Pullin's layup with five minutes remaining cut the deficit to six.
The Highlanders continued pressing on what turned into an 11-1 run that shifted the momentum back to UCR. The much-anticipated matchup came down to the wire as expected, with Olbrich's bucket to put him over 20 points for the first time as a Highlander cut the deficit to a field goal before Hawaii iced it at the free throw line.
UC Riverside will take a full week off before hosting UC San Diego on Saturday, January 28 at the SRC Arena with a 5:00 p.m. tipoff on ESPN+.
