Late Surge Not Enough in Loss at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – UC Riverside made the late stages of Sunday's matinee at Portland interesting, but ultimately dropped a 76-65 decision to the Pilots at the Chiles Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Isaiah Moses broke UCR out of a two-minute scoring drought with a second-chance three midway through the first half.
  • Barrington Hargress did all of his first half scoring as halftime grew nearer. The freshman helped UCR hit four of five shots with all eight of his 11 points up until halftime coming in a three-minute stretch with a pair of threes. UC Riverside ultimately hit five of its final eight shots in the first half with four of those coming from Hargress.
  • The redshirt freshman played a key role in UCR scoring 20 of its 30 first half points off the bench. Defensively, the Highlanders held Portland to just two three-point attempts.
  • Wil Tattersall grabbed five of UCR's 19 second half rebounds, three of which led to Highlander buckets. Tattersall put back one of his own boards for a second-chance layup at 9:13.
  • UC Riverside made a late run, sinking six of nine shots in a four-minute span with threes from Hargress, Kyle Owens and Moses.
  • The Highlanders cut it to 10 with a minute remaining and forced a Pilot turnover, but were not able to complete the comeback.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Hargress set a career high for the second time in three contests with a team-high 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including four triples.
  • Owens scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half and Moses now has double-digit points in both of UCR's road contests this season.
  • The Highlanders outlasted Portland in points off turnovers (18-6) and bench points (29-10).
