Balanced Scoring Leads Highlanders to Blowout Win in Non-Conference Finale

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside used a balanced scoring attack led by 17 points from Jordan Webster to grab an 82-49 win over Cal Lutheran in Wednesday night's non-conference finale at the SRC Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Webster grabbed four of UCR's first eight points of the night as the Highlanders raced out to a quick 8-2 lead that would ultimately set the tone for the game. Matehya Bryant jumped into the mix with 10 points of her own at the end of the first, helping UCR continue to push offensively as the Highlanders generated a 22-7 lead after 10 minutes of action.
  • The duo reached 10 points apiece in the second quarter, the first of four Highlanders to score in double figures on the night. UC Riverside held the Regals to just 22.2 percent shooting in the early going and 32.3 percent at halftime on the other end of the floor.
  • Three Highlanders were in double figures scoring by the intermission, rounded out by Makayla Jackson's 10 points on a crisp 4-of-6 shooting. Jackson put in a productive 28-minute shift with 12 points of 5-of-9 shooting, two rebounds, three assists and a steal.
  • Esther Matarranz earned a contested bucket inside on the assist from Jaden Sanderson to cap a brief 5-0 run and reestablish a 15-point Highlander advantage midway through the third quarter. Maya Chocano also earned a hard-fought bucket late in the third for her first collegiate field goal. UCR busted the game open wide after halftime with a 52.9 percent clip in the third.
  • The Highlanders shut the door with a 57 percent shooting mark in the fourth.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • UC Riverside ended the non-conference slate with a win for the first time since 2019-20, when UCR knocked off then-WAC member Cal State Bakersfield at the SRC Arena.
  • Sasha Murphy picked up her first career points in the fourth quarter on Jordyn Marshall's season-high fifth assist of the night. Marshall ended the evening with a career-high eight assists.
  • Sanderson also saw a new career high with 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
  • The Highlanders kept intact their streak of having multiple double-figures scorers in every game this season after seeing four in Wednesday's rout. UCR manufactured at least three individual 10-point performances in a game for the second time this season.

UP NEXT

  • UC Riverside now turns its attention to Big West play, opening up the conference slate at home against UC Irvine on Thursday, December 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the SRC Arena on ESPN+.
