Baseball Splits With Utah Valley In Arizona

MESA, Ariz. - Due to inclement weather in Southern California over the weekend, the University of California, Riverside (UCR) Highlanders relocated their series with Utah Valley University (UVU) Wolverines, slated to play at home today originally, to the Gene Autry Park in Mesa, Arizona.

The Highlanders dropped the first game in a close bout with the Wolverines, 5-4, before exploding offensively in game two to win 8-1, ultimately splitting the doubleheader.

In game one, Utah Valley jumped on the scoreboard first with one run in the top of the second inning.

Alphonzo Mancinas smacked a two RBI triple in the third inning to bring UC Riverside into the lead, 2-1.

The Wolverines responded with a three-run homerun in the top of the third, lifting Utah Valley into the lead, 4-2.

UVU scored their fifth and final run on an error in the fourth inning.

The Highlanders fought back for the rest of the gsme, closing in within one run of the Wolverines.

Mason Grace hit an RBI single to score Jacob Badawi in the bottom of the fourth.

Badawi had an RBI single in the sixth, sending Jayden Lopez home. Solid pitching on both sides held the game 5-4 in favor of the Wolverines for the final 3 innings.

Tucker Juline threw five scoreless innings in relief of starter Blake Burzell, letting up just two hits and one walk.

Game two was scoreless until the third inning when Tyler Weaver ignited an explosive six-run inning with a sacrifice fly that sent Andrew Rivas home.

Jayden Lopez and Dominic Martinez RBI singled in succession, followed by Nick Poss grounding out to score Lopez.

Jacob Badawi hit a two RBI single to center field, putting the Highlanders up 6-0 before the Wolverines could break into the scoreline.

Eric Marrujo held the Wolverines at bay with scoreless pitching, allowing his offense to build on their third inning run spree.

In the sixth inning, Rivas grounded out for an RBI that scored Nick Poss. Jacob Shanks doubled down the left field line, sending Badawi across home plate for the Highlanders' eighth run.

Once again, the Wolverines scored their final run on an error, this time in the eighth inning. The Highlanders won the second game to secure the split, 8-1.

Head Coach Justin Johnson said, "I am proud of the way the team responded after losing a close one in the first game." He continued, "the key in game 2 was Marrujo on the mound. Add our six-run third inning on top of that, and it all came together."

Marrujo threw six scoreless innings with five strikeouts, letting up just five hits.

Jacob Shanks led the offensive charge, going three for two at the plate with one RBI.

Also on fire was Jacob Badawi, who hit four for two in the second game with two RBIs.

Coach Johnson wrapped up saying, "Looking ahead to Sunday, we just want to be mentally prepared for a doubleheader and ready to compete all 18 innings, just like they did today."

Next, the Highlanders host a doubleheader on Sunday, February 26 against UVU at the Riverside Sports Complex, weather permitting. First pitch is scheduled for 11AM.
