RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and gave up the lead, but completed the comeback on Opening Day with a 5-3 win over Middle Tennessee State on Thursday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field.
The opening contest of the Lynn Russell Miller Classic moved the Highlanders to 1-0 for the first time since 2018.
Haylee Kela kicked off her fifth year in the Inland Empire with a quick strike. Kela knocked an 0-1 pitch into right center for an RBI double that plated Nadia Witt. UCR doubled its lead after Kela came home on a sacrifice fly from Marissa Burk.
Witt and Taylor Burdette combined to go 4 for 6 at the plate.
A triple pushed the Blue Raiders ahead in the top half of the fourth, but UCR punched back quickly with Burdette bunting up the middle to bring home Kat Montuya for the tying run. The Highlanders got insurance an inning later on back-to-back RBI singles from Burk and Gigi Araki.
UCR continues on in the Lynn Russell Miller Classic with a 2:00 p.m. contest with the Blue Raiders on Friday.
