RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside opened up the home portion of the 2023 Big West schedule with a doubleheader against Cal Poly on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 and 6-2 at Amy S. Harrison Field.
Marissa Burk went 2 for 3 in the series opener, but the Highlanders wouldn't muster much offense until a bases-loaded situation in the sixth.
UCR put their three due up hitters on base consecutively to load the bases with no outs. Burk reached on a fielder's choice before Rebeca Cabezas was called out at home, but back-to-back strikeouts prevented UC Riverside from putting their offensive stamp on game one.
UC Riverside battled back from a 2-0 deficit in game two with Burk involved in both scoring plays. The senior singled to right in the first before flying out to center in the third to score Nadia Witt.
Emma Falen came into the game to shut the door on Cal Poly's fifth-inning threat with a runner on third. The freshman fanned two Mustangs on the day before giving up the winning home run in the eighth.
