Baseball Downs San Diego State for Midweek Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside came back from a brief 1-0 deficit, picking up a 3-1 midweek win over San Diego State on a chilly Tuesday night at the Riverside Sports Complex. 

SDSU jumped on the scoreboard early with an RBI single in the top of the first. UCR was a bit slower to the scoreboard, but got there nevertheless with a two-spot in the second. The Highlanders found insurance an inning later on a Jacob Badawi RBI single. 

Badawi drove in Alphonzo Mancinas, who set the Highlander offense in motion with a double to right center.

UCR gave its pitching staff plenty of experience in the midweek tilt, going through six hurlers with the Aztecs threatening on multiple occasions. Caleb Turner faced the first test of the evening in his third appearance of 2023 and first at The Plex, giving SDSU runners on second and third in the third innings before getting bailed out with a flyout to straightaway center. 

Alexander Rivas came in for relief in the fourth and got a quick 1-2-3 inning to limit the damage. Rivas was relieved in the sixth by Blake Burzell, who also faced a threatening situation before escaping unscathed. Anthony Mata and Nick Poss each went 2 for 4 on the evening, while Cruz Barrios picked up his first save of the season in UCR's second win in its last three. 

UC Riverside is headed to Texas for a three-game series at Lamar starting on Friday before diving into Big West play with UC San Diego and Long Beach State.
