RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside closed out a three-game series with Cal State Fullerton on Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex with a narrow 5-4 loss after erasing a 4-0 deficit.
Fullerton went ahead early with two runs in the first and another in the sixth, but the Highlanders would threaten here and there throughout the series finale.
Mason Grace collected just one hit on the day, but his lone hit of the series was one the Highlanders desperately needed at the right time. Grace slapped a double into right center that scored Anthony Mata, Dominic Martinez and Anthony McFarland, and it came after the trio collected consecutive singles to kickstart the inning.
UCR tied things later in the inning on a fielder's choice before Fullerton won it with a run in the top of the ninth.
McFarland kept a new on-base streak going - now at four games - while tallying his second two-hit game of the series, and Jacob Shanks collected his team-leading 12th multi-hit game of the season.
The Highlanders will travel across town on Tuesday, April 18 for the Crosstown Showdown at California Baptist. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
