WALNUT, Calif. - The bar was set higher on the individual and program level in a number of respects for UC Riverside at the Mt. SAC relays.
The women's 4x400 team ran another 46-second time, their fourth of the year and good for fifth in their heat. Jacoby Madise ran the 100m with a fast start, finishing in 10.73.
AZUSA, Calif. - Numerous records and personal bests fell in Azusa for UC Riverside at the annual Bryan Clay Invitational in a number of events.
Norma Alvarez was less than a second behind second place in the steeplechase, but her 10:25.61 cracked number two all-time in UCR history while Joshua Mendoza set a new 10k lifetime best at 30:21.73 to wrap up day one in Azusa.
The story of the weekend, though, was the 5000m on the women's side. Linda Perez became the first woman in program history to run a sub-16 5000m, clocking in at 15:54.16 with Collette Lowengrub also under her previous school record at 16:22.10.
Samantha Velazquez earned Big West qualifiers and personal bests in both the 800m and 1500m in 2:13.32 and 4:36.06, while the trio of Lance Denhalter, Sean Caster, and Tyler Kaan earned Big West qualifying marks in the men's 1500m, with times of 3:49.54, 3:52.29 and 3:52.56. Denhalter's mark is number nine in program history.
UCR outdid itself in the men's 400m with three season bests and a pair of Big West qualifiers. Andrew Jackson's 47.97 and Liam Car's 48.73 were conference qualifying marks, and Reggie Day put in a 49.37 for the trio's third season best.
In the women's 400m, Saniyah Starks lowered her outdoor best to 56.45 with another Big West qualifier. Starks also clocked in at 24.65 in the 200m for a lifetime best and another Big West qualifier. Other PRs in the 200m included Sierra Sutton (25.32), Delaney Harris (24.74), George Cervanka (21.65) and Madise (21.89).
Monea Jennings finished sixth in her heptathlon group with a 2-day total of 4381, a personal best and number in UCR history.
Michelle Algiers moved from 10th to seventh on the all-time list in the women's triple jump with a mark of 11.92m, while Janessa Morse landed just outside the top-10 list with a Big West qualifying mark of 11.58m. On the men's side, Calvin Black improved his triple jump mark by over a foot with a jump of 14.74m.
UC Riverside is back at home for its second of two home meets of the season, hosting the Chris Rinne Twilight on Friday, April 21 at the UC Riverside Track Stadium.
