Highlanders Walk Off Hawaii for Series Victory

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside used a walk-off walk to down Hawaii 7-6 in Sunday's rubber match at the Riverside Sports Complex.

UCR has now won three of its last five and exceeded its win total from last season after securing its first Big West series win of the season and first since April of last year. The Highlanders erased their second deficit in as many days, washing away a six-run deficit last night before overcoming being down four in the series finale.

Jacob Badawi recorded his sixth RBI in his last six games to put UCR on the board in the third after Hawaii jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

Dominic Martinez picked up where he left off in game two with a two-run RBI single into left field, cutting the deficit to two in the fifth inning. Martinez extended his hit streak to six with the knock while picking up his fifth and sixth RBIs in his last six contests.

Badawi scored on Martinez's single into left, giving the sophomore his first run of the series and fourth in his last six games after picking up one each of last weekend's three games at UC Davis. Mason Grace, who also touched home on the play, collected his third run of the series.

Jacob Shanks knocked a go-ahead RBI into the outfield for a second straight day, eliminating another deficit for the Highlanders in the seventh inning before Hawaii tied it on a fielder's choice in the eighth.

Anthony McFarland began the ninth with fireworks in the form of a leadoff double, as UC Riverside ultimately loaded the bases on their way to a walkoff walk for the series victory.

UC Riverside will keep the homestand going next weekend, welcoming UC Santa Barbara to the Riverside Sports Complex as Big West play rolls on. Game one against the Gauchos is slated for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch on Friday, May 5 on ESPN+.
