RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside dropped an 11-2 decision to California Baptist in Tuesday's Crosstown Showdown at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Jacob Shanks now owns a 12-game hit streak after going 2 for 3 on the night with a run - his third in his last four games - while roping his sixth double of the year into left center on the first pitch of the fifth inning. Dominic Martinez also stayed hot, recording a hit now in nine of his last 10 games.
Alexander Rivas racked up the strikeouts in yet another midweek performance, going 5.1 innings with seven punchouts - a new season high and the most for Rivas since fanning four against Tarleton State on April 12.
The Highlanders put a runner on third in each of the game's first four innings, but came close to erasing the shutout in the fourth when Jayden Lopez was out on a play at the plate. Lopez worked a full count into a leadoff walk before stealing second and then attempting to make the long trip home on a single from Jacob Badawi.
Keith Shelton saw action for just the sixth game of the season and first at the Plex with an opportunity to snag his first career RBI, but went down swinging in the eighth. Troy Anderson also pinch hit in the eighth but struck out as well for his first at-bat of the season.
UC Riverside will resume play this weekend at CSU Bakersfield. Game one from Hardt Field is set for 6:05 p.m. on Friday, May 12 on ESPN+.
