UCR Draws with NJIT in Sunday Matinee

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside and NJIT shared the points on Sunday morning at the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium, with plenty of shots but no goals between the two sides in a 0-0 affair.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UC Riverside threatened early with four corner kicks in the opening nine minutes.
  • Lavinia Vaipulu ricocheted a chip shot off the crossbar in the seventh minute after going full steam ahead into the final third. UCR's ensuing corner led to a shot from Arianna Dominguez that rolled wide of the left post. Vaipulu came within inches of the opener again in the 34th minute on a left-footed chip from outside the 18.
  • Spenser Gonzales nearly finished off a counter attack minutes later in the 36th minute after UCR won the ball back in the attacking third.
  • Cassia Souza found herself at the right place and right time in the 21st minute, as NJIT tried to find a hole in the top shelf off a corner kick. The visitors split the defense with under two minutes until the halftime break and threw a couple shots just over the crossbar.
  • Kayla Kanaly found Daphane Mendez in between defenders to the left of the goal, but NJIT's keeper read it the whole way to maintain the 0-0 scoreline. Mendez had a good look on net in the 81st minute but missed the near post.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Souza was at the right place and right time throughout the course of the morning, making four saves against an NJIT side that put up 11 shots to UCR's 12.
  • UC Riverside's 12 shots were a season-high, outshooting the opposition for the first time in 2023. Vaipulu, Mendez and Braelynn Llamoca led the way with two shots apiece.
  • Sunday's draw was UC Riverside's second clean sheet of non-conference play after a scoreless affair at San Diego on August 19.

UP NEXT

  • UC Riverside is back on the road next weekend, traveling to Sacramento State and Nevada. UCR's visit to the Capitol City is slated for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff on Thursday, August 31 from Hornet Field.
