Highlanders Steal a Point against CSUN

76th-minute equalizer secures third draw in last four matches for UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside picked up its third draw in its last four matches on Sunday evening at the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium with a 2-2 draw against CSUN on International Night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UCR opened Sunday's match with the majority of possession for the first 15 minutes. Mimi Dominguez recorded her only shot six minutes in with a soft roller on net before Sarah Mahfoud tried her luck at the near post a few minutes later.
  • Marieke ten Brink picked up her second career goal and second in as many weeks with a conversion from the spot in the 15th minute to put the Highlanders up 1-0. Dominguez nearly made it 2-0 in the 22nd had it not been for being a foot ahead of the ball.
  • Now on its back heels, CSUN looked to counter with the high press and capitalized in the 27th minute on an equalizer into the top corner from well outside the 18.
  • Allee Grashoff prevented the Matadors from going ahead just before halftime with quick instincts and the help of a clearance from Braelynn Llamoca.
  • Momentum shifted benches after halftime as Emma Gonzalez rattled off a pair of attempts at the back post in the 51st and 52nd minutes.
  • Grashoff dove to her right in the 66th minute and pushed aside an attempt at the near post to keep the game level.
  • CSUN went ahead, though, in the 70th minute on a penalty conversion of their own. UC Riverside kept chopping and countered shortly after with Sanaa Guyness' first goal of the season in the 76th minute to draw level.

NOTABLES

  • UC Riverside has now played to three draws in their last four matches. Two of those draws have come with a Highlander equalizer after the 75th minute.
  • With Sunday's draw, UCR has now recorded consecutive results against the Matadors for the first time since 2002-03.
  • Grashoff was one save short of tying a career high, recording eight against 14 shots faced.

UP NEXT

  • UC Riverside now begins its final road trip of the season at UC Davis with a 4:00 p.m. kickoff on Thursday, October 17 on ESPN+.
