Men’s Basketball Shakes Off Cal State San Marcos in Exhibition

Kaleb Smith records double double, Hargress goes for 20 points

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside warmed up for the 2024-25 season on Friday night at the SRC Arena with an 89-61 exhibition win over Cal State San Marcos.  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • UCR opened the wire-to-wire victory with a 12-2 advantage at the first media break with seven points from Kaleb Smith. The lead only grew from there as UC Riverside hit a stretch of four of five makes to create a 22-8 lead.  
  • Gavis Davis led the three-point charge early, going 3 of 4 from deep and leading all scorers at the under-eight media timeout with 11 points. The redshirt junior catalyzed a 10-2 run with his range.  
  • Davis subbed out and passed the shooting torch to Barrington Hargress, whose 6-of-7 shooting spurt continued with a pair of field goals and a three.  
  • UC Riverside shot 52.6% in the first half and outrebounded San Marcos 20-7.  
  • UCR continued to assert itself out of halftime, forcing a San Marcos turnover before Rikus Schulte slammed it home at the other end.  
  • The Highlanders shot 44% in the second half and held as big a lead as 35 points after halftime.  
  • Davis and Smith combined to go 7 of 10 in the second half with 16 points.  

NOTABLES 

  • Schulte earned the start in his unofficial debut on Friday with eight points and five rebounds.  
  • Smith recorded a double double with 11 rebounds and a game-high 21 points.  
  • UCR outrebounded the Cougars 43-27 and outscored them in the paint 44-20.
