MALIBU, Calif. - The Highlanders traveled up the California coast to take on the Pepperdine Waves. UCR looked for its first win on the road this year and its fourth win all time against Pepperdine. The Highlanders last win came back in 2012 at Pepperdine topping the Waves 79-71. In that game UCR was lead by Tre'Shonti Nottingham who scored 29 points and went 13-14 from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Highlanders and the Waves went back and forth in the first quarter. Kaylani Polk led the way scoring three. Gemma Cutler, Shelley Duchemin and Zoe Tillery all had a bucket in the first. UCR trailed Pepperdine 10-9.
- In the second quarter UCR used a 9-0 run to take a nine point lead, 24-15. Polk and Duchemin both hit key three's to help extend the lead. UCR had a scoring drought in the final two minutes of the half, but was able to maintain a 24-19 lead. The Highlanders' bench outscored the Waves in the first half, 17-6 and out rebounded the Waves, 23-16. Esther Matarranz led the way on the boards pulling down four.
- The third quarter saw both teams trading baskets. At the 4:39 mark the Waves went on an 8-0 run and cut the Highlanders' lead to one. Duchemin hit a jumper to stop the bleeding and Makayla Rose followed with a layup extending the lead to five. Pepperdine then went on a 5-0 run to end the third, tying the game at 36.
- The fourth quarter started the way the game did, with both teams trading baskets early. UCR had an early two point lead when Pepperdine hit back-to-back jumpers and took a two point lead. Then Tillery hit a big three with 2:58 to go in the fourth giving UCR a one point lead. Rose followed up with two free throws extending the lead to three. At the 2:00 minute mark Pepperdine tied the game at 45. Both teams went on a bit of a scoring drought until Cutler hit two free throws with less a minute in the quarter. A late layup by the Waves forced the game into OT.
- In the extra session the Waves jumped out on a quick 5-0 run taking a 52-47 lead. Tillery hit a jumper, but Pepperdine was able to maintain its lead and eventually win the game 55-52.
