Vandals Defeat Highlanders in Morning Game

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Highlanders hosted the Idaho Vandals in an 11 a.m. tip at the SRC Arena. This marked the ninth time these two teams have met and the first time since 2012 when the Highlanders hosted the Vandals and fell 78-64. Idaho led the all-time series 5-3. UCR was looking to get back into the win column after dropping games to Boise State and Pepperdine. UCR's lone win came at home earlier this month when they topped Whittier College.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UCR jumped out to a quick start taking and early 5-1 lead over Idaho. But then Idaho settled down and with the game tied at 11, the Vandals went on an 13-0 run ending the quarter with an 18-7 lead. Esther Matarranz led the way for UCR in the scoring column with the Highlanders' lone three.
  • The second quarter started with both teams matching each other shot for shot. The Vandals maintained a double digit lead at the media timeout. Trailing, the Highlanders looked to get some defensive stops and more importantly convert on the offensive side of the ball. The Vandals were able to maintain their eleven point lead going into halftime.
  • The second half saw Idaho maintain and at times extend the lead. The Vandals had the game under control in the second half as the Highlanders tried to get back into it. UCR did outscore  Idaho in the fourth quarter 17-14, but came up short to Idaho, 56-42.

NOTABLES

  • UCR was led by Zoe Tillery who scored eleven on 5-of-13 shooting.
  • Gemma Cutler led the way on the boards for UCR grabbing five.
