SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Highlanders opened the 2024/25 campaign at Santa Clara University. This was the seventh time the Broncos and Highlanders matched up on the court, with each winning three times. UC Riverside fell to Santa Clara 73-60.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Seneca Hackley put UCR up 5-4 early, before Santa Clara took control of the first quarter leading 19-11 after one.Â
- Esther Matarranz hit a free throw midway through the second giving UCR a 22-21 lead, but Santa Clara went on a 7-0 run and would not relinquish the lead. Zoe Tillery's three pointer with 1:56 left in the first half cut the lead to three and that is as close as it would get.
- With 8:24 left in the game Santa Clara took a 63-42 lead, but UCR responded with a 7-0 run of its own capped by a couple of jumpers from Shelley Duchemin, pulling the Highlanders within 12, but both teams traded baskets and UCR couldn't get it closer than 11.Â
- Duchemin led UCR in scoring with 16 points, going 6-7 from the floor and 3-4 from the line.

- Matarranz led the Highlanders with 37 minutes.
- UCR's reserves outscored Santa Clara's 27-13.
- Defensively, the Highlanders forced 18 turnovers scoring 27 points.
- UCR held Santa Clara without a field goal in the final 2:57 of the game.
- Santa Clara is now 4-3 all time against UCR.
