RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Former UC Riverside men's basketball assistant coach and UCR Athletics Hall of Famer Larry Reynolds passed away this past weekend after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
Reynolds played for UCR from 1973-76 under Freddie Goss, leading the Highlanders to two West Regional Championships and earning California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) MVP honors in 1974-75 after averaging 13.5 points per game. He graduated from UC Riverside in 1976 with a degree in Urban Studies and later served as the lead assistant and ultimately associate head coach under John Masi from 1979 to 1995.
The Highlanders were a force to be reckoned with during Reynolds' coaching tenure, racking up eight CCAA titles and three West Regional titles in addition to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances. UCR made its deepest tournament run in Reynolds' final year on the sideline, earning a 1994-95 national runner up finish to Bruce Pearl-led Southern Indiana. Reynolds was inducted into the UC Riverside Athletics Hall of Fame the following year.
Reynolds later served as an assistant coach at San Francisco for two seasons after UC Riverside and went on to become the head coach at Cal State San Bernardino, Stanislaus State and Long Beach State.
He led Cal State San Bernardino to a 110-35 record with three CCAA titles and two regional titles during his five-year stint in San Bernardino while also being named the 1998-99 NABC District Eight Coach of the Year. Reynolds replicated that success later at Long Beach State, where he led the Beach to three postseason appearances in five years, winning a Big West postseason title and NCAA Tournament appearance in his final season. Reynolds then won 121 games in nine years at Stanislaus State, guiding the Warriors to the 2013-14 NCAA Division II Tournament.
UC Riverside will honor Coach Reynolds during its men's basketball game on February 10 against UC Irvine at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are available now at highlanderstickets.universitytickets.com.
