Highlanders Split Sunday with Portland State, Utah State

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside split Sunday's final day of the Lynn R. Miller Classic with an 8-0 win over Portland State and a 5-2 defeat to Utah State.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UCR started Sunday with a bang, putting up seven runs in the first inning against the Vikings. Kat Montuya continued the scoring parade in the second with a leadoff home run to center.
  • The Highlander defense found ways to fend off a couple offensive threats from Portland State in Sunday's opener, and Alexis Galvan strung together a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fourth en route to recording the win.
  • Nadia Witt went 2 for 2 with a run and two RBIs in the win, later falling a single short of the cycle in the finale against Utah State.
  • The Highlanders began their scoring against USU in the first inning for the second consecutive game. Lauryn Garewal connected on a first-pitch RBI single after Witt led off the game with a triple to left center. Witt later took the first pitch of the third inning long to tie the game at two.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Witt's three hits in the finale against Utah State all came in leadoff fashion. The Oregon native went 3 for 4 against the Aggies with two runs and an RBI. This is the earliest in the season that Witt has logged three hits in a game in her five years as a Highlander.
  • Jackie Alday went 2 for 4 at the dish against Utah State, singling in the bottom of the first inning to move Lauryn Garewal 60 feet from home.

UP NEXT

  • UC Riverside returns to action on Tuesday, February 13 to host Caifornia Baptist. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from Amy S. Harrison Field and tickets are available now at highlanderstickets.universitytickets.com.
